CHAPTER NINETEEN

I spent most of our drive home sleeping, and when I wasn’t asleep, I pretended to be. I couldn’t face him right then—so torn by disgust, anger, and worry. There was a deep pit of stress gnawing at me, wondering now if I had it wrong all along.

I didn’t want to believe it, but I couldn’t deny that what he’d said had worked. It had caused me to doubt myself. Even more so than before.

To doubt what I believed. How would I ever come back from the way I’d treated him if I was wrong about everything?

He lugged the bags inside the apartment, inspecting both the handle and the lock on our door. I followed closely behind him, rubbing sleep from my eyes as he looked around, searching to make sure nothing was out of place. Once he was satisfied, he carried the bags to our bedroom while I moved to the kitchen, my stomach rumbling for something to eat for the first time all day.

Thinking quickly, I poured a can of soup into a bowl, searching the fridge for a bag of takeout I could throw away, in case Joe searched for evidence that Dan had been here. Once I’d taken care of that, I pulled down the loaf of bread, preparing two peanut butter sandwiches.

The soup was still cooling in the bowl, and two peanut butter sandwiches lay in front of me when Joe reappeared. He took in the scene, his gaze trailing over the small table in the center of our eat-in kitchen. I lifted a spoonful of broth to my lips, blowing on it gently before slurping it down.

“It doesn’t look like anything was touched,” he told me, running a hand across his jaw.

“That’s good.”

“Yeah, I just double-checked everything to be sure. Looks like you’re feeling better. Is that the soup Dan brought you?” He pointed to the fridge, still staring at the food without moving toward me. I knew he was waiting for an invitation, and I extended it cautiously by pushing one of the sandwiches toward him.

“Here you go,” I said.

Looking relieved, he sank down in the chair across from me, eyeing the sandwich.

“It’s not poisoned…” I said with a playful eye roll.

His laugh eased the tension. “Are you sure?” He picked up the sandwich and took two ravenous bites. “Thank you. I was starving,” he admitted once he’d swallowed them, brushing a glob of peanut butter from the corner of his mouth with a sheepish grin.

“Look, Joe, I should…” I placed my spoon down, smoothing my hands in front of me. “I should apologize to you. I mean, I’ve been awful lately.”

His eyes widened with obvious shock, but he didn’t argue or say anything. Instead, he placed his food down, too, giving me his full attention as he dusted the crumbs from his hands and waited for me to go on.

“I don’t know what’s going on with the pictures, but they scared me. Before, when you…well, I mean, when I found out that you’d cheated on me, that was the worst day of my life.
